The Definitive Guide To CBD Oil For Dogs

Dog and CBD OilAt Honest Marijuana, we love our pets. We want them to be happy and healthy and live a long time as cherished members of our families. That’s why we’re so delighted to put together this definitive guide to CBD oil for dogs.

In this article, we’ll talk about:

  • What CBD oil is.
  • The benefits of CBD for dogs.
  • The best way to administer CBD oil for dogs.
  • Where you can get CBD oil for your furry friend.

We’ll also discuss dosage recommendations and what side effects, if any, you can expect when using CBD oil for dogs. Before we get to that, though, we’ll answer the most basic question in this entire discussion: what is CBD?

What Is CBD?

CBD Make-up

CBD’s scientific name is cannabidiol. It is a member of a class of chemicals known as cannabinoids. Other common cannabinoids include:

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
  • Cannabigerolic Acid (CBGA).
  • Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA).
  • Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA).
  • Cannabichromene (CBC).
  • Cannabigerol (CBG).
  • Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV).
  • Cannabidivarin (CBDV).
  • Cannabinol (CBN).

All of these cannabinoids are found, to varying degrees, in the marijuana plant. And as you can see from their multi-syllabic scientific names, they can be a mouthful to say. That’s why most people just use the abbreviations.

The human brain contains neurons that interact directly with the cannabinoids found in marijuana. These neurons have come to be known as cannabinoid receptors. For example, when THC interacts with these cannabinoid receptors, it produces a psychoactive effect that is known as getting high. When CBD interacts with those same cannabinoid receptors, on the other hand, it produces a broad range of medicinal effects without the high provided by THC.

The intriguing thing about all this chemistry is that research now shows CBD to have many of the same medicinal effects on dogs that it has on humans. But you don’t want to sprinkle raw marijuana into your doggy’s dish in an attempt to make him feel better. Raw marijuana isn’t good for man or beast.

To achieve the beneficial effects CBD can have on your canine friend, you need to give her CBD oil for dogs. But what exactly is CBD oil? We’ll answer that question in the next section.

What Is CBD Oil?

Essential oil made from medicinal cannabis

CBD oil is a concentrated extract, or tincture, of the cannabis plant. More specifically, it’s an extract of a high-CBD/low-THC strain of the cannabis plant. This extract is produced by passing a solvent—like CO2, butane, alcohol, olive oil, or even ice water—over the mature cannabis plant matter.

As the solvent passes over and through the leaves, stems, and stalk, it dissolves (extracts) the cannabinoids, terpenes, and trichomes and holds them in the solution. The solvent is then forced to evaporate, leaving behind an oily concentrate known as CBD oil (as well as various other slang terms).

It’s important to understand that CBD oil is non-psychoactive for dogs, so there’s no way to get your furry little friend high on CBD oil. That’s the beauty of the stuff—it’s all medical benefits without the drawbacks of regular marijuana.

Now that you know what CBD is and how CBD oil is made, let’s investigate the benefits of CBD oil for dogs.

What Are The Benefits Of CBD Oil For Dogs?

Like humans, dogs can suffer from a wide variety of illnesses, both physical and mental. CBD oil can help decrease the symptoms of those illnesses and make them easier to bear. Here are some of the benefits of CBD oil for dogs.

1. CBD Inhibits The Growth Of Cancer Cells

Evidence from scientific studies shows that CBD has a threefold effect on cancer cells:

  1. This cannabinoid prevents cancer cells from spreading.
  2. It interferes with cancer cell growth.
  3. CBD even induces cancer cell death.

Though laboratory studies have only been conducted on mice and rats, numerous reports from humans (like Rick Simpson) have shown some very promising results. It’s not hard to see how CBD oil for dogs can be used to treat cancer.

2. CBD Suppresses Seizures

Seizures—disruptions in electrical activity that can result in violent shaking—originate in the brain and can be very difficult to treat. CBD oil has been shown to significantly reduce the intensity and number of those electrical disruptions in the human brain.

Because our four-legged friends have the same cannabinoid receptors in their brains as humans do, they too can benefit from a suppression of seizures by using CBD oil.

3. CBD Combats Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression occur as a result of an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, and both humans and dogs are susceptible to these disorders. The introduction of CBD into the brain can normalize and stabilize the chemical fluctuations that lead to anxiety and depression. CBD also interacts with both the adenosine and serotonin receptors in the brain to help them work properly.

4. CBD Reduces Swelling & Relieves Pain

Pain and swelling in most higher mammals (like humans and dogs) are regulated by the vanilloid receptor in the brain. When CBD interacts with these types of neurons, it effectively blocks the receptor from turning on and prevents it from signaling the rest of the body to exhibit pain and become inflamed.

5. CBD Stimulates Appetite & Decreases Nausea

CBD stimulates appetite and decreases nausea by interacting with certain neurons in the brain. This can encourage an already-ill body to begin repairing itself, especially when the body (dog or human) is suffering from a systemic illness like cancer or seizures. The body needs energy from food to fight those disorders, and if it can’t get enough nourishment, the illness wins.

What Are The Side Effects Of CBD Oil For Dogs?

The side effects of CBD oil for dogs are minimal and only occur in extreme cases. The most commonly reported side effect among CDB-oil users is drowsiness. But most report that the drowsiness is very similar to that produced by an antihistamine, like Benadryl.

Extreme side effects include itchiness or vomiting, but these reactions are rare. That’s it for the side effects. And really, do you consider drowsiness a side effect? Sounds like just another benefit. After all, your dog is already going to sleep, on average, 14 hours a day anyway.

How Do You Administer CBD Oil For Dogs?

CBD Oil Dropper

The easiest way to administer CBD oil for dogs is directly into their mouths with an eyedropper. You can also drip CBD oil onto a small treat and feed it to your dog. Keep in mind that CBD is not a fast-acting chemical. It can take a few hours for your dog to experience pain relief and a few days to see a decrease in inflammation.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Give Your Dog?

Nose of dog

Every dog is different, so we highly recommend starting with a low dose. That way, your dog can get used to the new chemical in his system. Here is our recommended progression for giving your dog CBD oil.

  1. Start with 1 drop of CBD oil per 10 pounds ONCE per day.
  2. Continue administering 1 drop per 10 pounds once per day for one week.
  3. Increase the dosage to 1 drop per 10 pounds TWICE per day.
  4. Continue administering 1 drop per 10 pounds twice per day for one week.
  5. Increase the dosage to 1 drop per 10 pounds THREE TIMES per day.
  6. Continue administering 1 drop per 10 pounds three times per day for one week.
  7. If necessary, increase the dosage again per the above pattern.

You’ll notice in the above progression that the number of drops per pound never changes. Only the frequency with which you administer those drops changes. The key to this progression is to observe your dog’s reaction and find a dosage that provides the benefits you’re looking for without the side effects.

If any of those side effects do occur, stop treatment immediately, wait for the effects to resolve, and then restart the progression at a lower dose.

Where Can You Get CBD Oil For Dogs?

The best thing to do when you’re considering buying CBD oil for your dog is to talk to the professionals at your local marijuana dispensary. They can provide guidance regarding all things marijuana and point you in the right direction so you can choose the best CBD oil available.

You can also talk to your veterinarian about CBD oil for dogs, but don’t be surprised if he recommends against it. The results of CBD research are promising, but they are also new. Your vet may not be up on all the latest science. Take his advice, but don’t let it dissuade you from trying CBD oil for your dog.

Research on your own, and then talk to other dog owners to see what they know. And remember that the side effects are largely nil, so it won’t hurt to try CBD oil for yourself. If your dog reacts badly, you can always stop.
